J&R Successfully Deployed SIP Explosion-proof Communication System for Offshore Oil & Gas Drilling Platform in India

In 2019, an offshore oil & gas drilling platform in India launched a communication system upgrading project. Operating in a harsh marine environment with heavy salt spray, high humidity and drastic temperature fluctuations, the platform contains working zones with flammable and explosive substances. Conventional communication equipment lacks adequate anti-corrosion and explosion-proof performance, prone to shell corrosion, noisy voice calls and communication breakdowns during emergencies, which poses serious risks to production safety. J&R delivered a total of 24 industrial SIP communication terminals, including two models separately deployed in high-risk and general working zones to build an integrated IP emergency dispatching communication network.

Project Requirements

  1. Terminals for high-risk areas shall hold global explosion-proof certifications to fit flammable gas environments and eliminate safety hazards caused by medium leakage;
  2. High ingress protection against water, dust and salt mist to cut maintenance frequency and reduce operation costs;
  3. Built-in noise reduction design to block noise from waves and machinery, supporting speed dial, group calling and linkage with explosion-proof warning lights;
  4. All terminals compatible with SIP dispatching platforms, supporting remote management and automatic switchover between primary and backup servers;
  5. Stable operation within a wide temperature range of -40℃ to +55℃, meeting standards for long-term continuous industrial operation.

Customized Solution

  1. JREX106-A01-HB-SIP (For High-risk Working Zones)

Constructed with die-cast aluminum alloy housing, this model is fully certified by ATEX, IECEx, EAC and INMETRO, with IP66 ingress protection. Equipped with a noise-cancelling handset and external explosion-proof horn, it effectively filters loud on-site noise for clear voice communication. It supports 10 groups of speed dial, mute, last number redial and sequential group calling. The matched explosion-proof beacon is powered via the telephone line without extra wiring, perfectly suited for emergency intercom in offshore high-risk areas.
  1. JR105-FK-SIP (For General Working Zones)

It features anti-corrosion die-cast aluminum housing with IP67 protection, excellent vibration resistance and salt mist tolerance. Equipped with a 128×64 pixel LCD screen, it clearly displays call status and equipment operating data. Compliant with SIP 2.0 protocol, it supports PoE power supply and automatic primary/backup server switchover. A built-in web management portal enables remote parameter configuration and equipment self-diagnosis, ensuring seamless connection with the central dispatching system. Fitted with a noise-reducing handset and full rubber industrial keypad, it supports mute, redial and other practical functions, and allows connection to external broadcast horns for simultaneous public paging across large working areas.

Customer Benefits

The integrated system fundamentally solves two core issues: marine equipment corrosion and voice interference from ambient noise. IP66 and IP67 high ingress protection adapts to humid, windy offshore conditions, extending maintenance intervals and lowering labor costs. Standardized SIP networking delivers full communication coverage across all platform zones, maintaining uninterrupted communication during unexpected incidents. The solution greatly boosts the platform’s emergency response efficiency and overall operational safety, establishing a benchmark explosion-proof communication project for India’s offshore oil and gas industry.
