Successful Deployment of J&R Explosion-Proof Communication System on Vietsovpetro Offshore Drilling Platform

In 2021, J&R explosion-proof communication equipment was successfully deployed on an offshore oil & gas drilling platform in Vietnam. The project partner has been providing integrated engineering solutions for key industries including health care, oil & gas, education, and telecommunications, with extensive experience in Southeast Asian energy engineering projects.
 
The project involved the deployment of 20 sets of communication equipment, including the JREX106-AL Explosion-Proof Telephone and JR-TH-01 Industrial Acoustic Hood, providing reliable industrial communication support for high-risk offshore operation areas.

Communication Challenges in Harsh Offshore Environments

Offshore drilling platforms operate under complex environmental conditions, where communication equipment faces multiple challenges, including high salt mist, humidity, extreme noise, and hazardous areas.
Conventional communication terminals are vulnerable to corrosion caused by prolonged exposure to salt mist, resulting in frequent maintenance requirements. Meanwhile, continuous noise from waves and heavy machinery can significantly affect voice clarity and communication efficiency. In addition, hazardous zones require communication devices with certified explosion-proof performance to ensure operational safety.
To address these challenges, the project adopted industrial communication equipment featuring explosion-proof, corrosion-resistant, noise-reduction, and all-weather operating capabilities, while ensuring seamless compatibility with the platform’s existing PABX telephone system.

Enhanced Communication Reliability with Explosion Protection and Noise Reduction

  1. JREX106-AL Explosion-Proof Telephone
 
The JREX106-AL Explosion-Proof Telephone adopts fiberglass-reinforced plastic explosion-proof housing with an IP66 protection rating and international explosion-proof certifications including ATEX and IECEx, making it suitable for hazardous industrial environments.
The rugged housing provides excellent resistance against salt mist, corrosion, and oil contamination, while supporting stable operation in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +55°C.
Powered directly through the telephone line without additional power supply, the device features stainless steel backlight keys, noise-reduction handset and microphone, and supports both handset and hands-free communication modes. It also provides industrial functions including speed dialing, automatic redial, mute, and remote programming.
With an average mean time between failures (MTBF) exceeding 50,000 hours, the telephone is fully compatible with the platform’s existing PABX system, ensuring stable daily communication and emergency response.

2. JR-TH-01 Industrial Acoustic Hood

 
Designed for high-noise offshore environments, the JR-TH-01 Industrial Acoustic Hood features a fiberglass structure with a weather-resistant outdoor coating, providing excellent waterproof, dust-proof, and UV-resistant performance for indoor and outdoor installation.
The interior is equipped with high-density acoustic absorption material, achieving up to 23dB noise reduction to effectively minimize interference from waves and mechanical equipment.
With a built-in stainless steel mounting plate and wall-mounted installation design, the acoustic hood can be integrated with the explosion-proof telephone to significantly improve voice clarity in harsh industrial environments.

Strengthening Offshore Platform Safety Communication

After deployment, the integrated communication system effectively addressed key communication challenges on the offshore platform, including equipment corrosion, excessive background noise, and insufficient safety protection in hazardous areas.
The explosion-proof and corrosion-resistant design enhances equipment durability in marine environments, reducing maintenance frequency and operational costs. Combined with the acoustic hood, the explosion-proof telephone ensures clear and reliable communication between operators and the control center, improving emergency response efficiency.
The project demonstrates the reliability of J&R industrial communication solutions in offshore oil & gas applications and provides a proven communication reference for similar energy projects worldwide.
